The ascending darlings of the Australian Burlesque industry were celebrated and adored at the Australian Burlesque Festival’s annual ‘New Follies’ night on Thurs 26th October. Up and coming artists who have entered the scene in the proceeding two years were handpicked from hundreds of applicants to strut their stuff. This year New Follies was held at the Wonderland Spiegeltent in Docklands Melbourne providing the perfect smokey ambience for the old world art form. The annual festival which tours nationally has taken burlesque in all it’s many forms to 7 cities over 31 days, banging out 11 shows and including 125 performers. Wrapping up the 2017 tour in Melbourne with three incredible nights to sold out audiences.
Now in it’s eighth year, the ABF is presented by Dolores Daiquairi and is the world’s largest touring burlesque festival. Incorporating and celebrating all genres of burlesque from the classic to the exotic and everything in between.
Twenty unique performers graced the Follies stage with a variety of acts. While we’ve not included all of the performers here- enjoy a few of the highlights, or a tease if you will, if you missed out.
Velma Vouloir performed classic burlesque with a traditional and glamorous routine. This lady is a class act, absolutely gorgeous and impossible to take your eyes off when she steps on stage.
Miss G Veous was exactly that! Sassy yet charming this cute, curvy bombshell has such a natural energy on stage, looking forward to seeing more performances from her!
I particularly enjoyed Veruca Sour‘s performance. In the nicest possible way, she reminded me of ‘Olive Oyl’ from the old Popeye cartoons (My fav as a kid), just a little less ordinary and consequently extraordinary to watch. Combining comedy and theatre in her routine – transforming from a hobbling old woman to reveal a sassy show girl with a fabulous set of pins who could bust out a superb ‘Charlston‘ – bravo!
Saskia De Muir Delighted sci-fi fans in the audience with her nod to the growing ‘nerdlesque’ genre, a very geeky and sexy-as-hell homage to Dr. Who.
Performers travelled from interstate as well as many local artists who collectively wowed and shocked the audience with such richness of variety and unique creations. Visually stunning and providing plenty of laughs, the New Follies had the audience swept away in a night that demonstrated there are some very serious, and seriously good new acts bursting into the burlesque scene. Dolores Daiquairi says; “The future of Australian burlesque is in very good hands.”
While being a stunning showcase for the audience, this was also a competition between performers. Rainbow , who opened the show with a mad hatter routine, took out third place. I enjoy listening to crowd murmurs around me (Is that weird?) whether it’s right after an act or when I’m milling around in a line during interval and I believe there are always going to be performers who are more memorable than others, I think that’s just part of the magic of live performance art. On this night, and gauging by the many murmurs I overheard – Rainbow will be that stand out act for many of the attendees. I heard many a comment of awe and rightly so. She just had us hooked from start to finish.
Second place was taken out by Artemis Seven. The contemporary dancer in me fell a little bit in love! I’m not even entirely sure what I saw but I adored every second. Based in Canberra – she really is one to watch. Describing herself as a “glitchy hybrid of Artificial Intelligence & the goddess Artemis.” Artemis seven was equal parts alluring and terrifying. Look, all I’m going to say is if there is ever an apocalypse – I want to be wherever this lady is! Holy Wow! (Our featured Image above)
First place was awarded to O Nyx who absolutely sizzled from behind a Venetian screen, slinking out to seduce the crowd and conclude the night. As winner, she was then invited to appear at ABF Noir Exotic show.
The night was presided over by the glamorous Poppy Cherry, a feature and entertainer throughout the evening and so much more than an MC – Queen of proceedings who be more befitting Poppy’s knack with an audience. An incredible night and one not to be missed in future years of the festival.
